Portfolio Statement Draft

I want to try something new. What I mean is that I would like to get out of my comfort zone. Most of my life photography has been my medium of choice and in the past year or so, I have begun exploring the many possibilities of painting. Now I would like to push myself further and bring a more three dimensional element into my work. I was inspired to try this new 3D aspect after coming across the work of Eva Hesse. Some of her pieces use string and other types of long materials to create various effects such as long pieces of material hanging off the canvas and falling where they might giving the piece a free, unrestrained effect, and two small canvases connected together with many pieces of string creating a web-like effect. This lead me to choose beaded necklaces as my material because they can be used to create create similar effects to Eva Hesse's work, and yet offered up many new unique possibilities, such as the ability to use the material to build on top of itself in a more sculptural manner, offering up endless possibilities.
My hopes for this final project is to make a series of mini experiments or “studies” of the different ways I can used this material and combine my research into one final piece. This project will be a little less structured and planned than my previous projects where and will hopefully be the inspiration that I need to push myself into trying out a whole new medium and a new way of thinking, bringing me out of my comfort zone.

Final piece

This piece is different then things that I have done in the past, not only because of the materials used but also the fact that I have not limited my self to just the canvas but extends the material far past.

Original sketch and ideas

My original idea was to create a flower design using found materials and things that i have collected, but the more stuff i added to my piece the more crowded it became and in the end I ended up using a minimal amount of materials for my piece to create a more abstracted design that was inspired by the work of Eva Hesse
